Fans of the Flanaverse were recently relieved to hear that Mike Flanagan’s long-awaited The Fall of the House of Usher is still in the works and will hit Netflix in 2023.
Netflix recently completed production on its adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s classic 1839 short story of the same name, “The Fall of Usher.” Many of the franchise’s cast members are what fans have come to expect from Flanagan’s films, including wife Kate Siegel, Samantha Sloane, Rahul Kohli and Carla Gugino. Flanagan, also known in recent years for his work in feature films such as Doctor Sleep and Oculus, has become a master of Netflix horror series, bringing literary adaptations and originals to the popular streaming platform, Includes Midnight Club, Midnight Mass and Haunted Hill House. With Flanagan’s recent move to Amazon, fans have wondered about the fate of his final work for Netflix.
The good news comes from Flanagan’s comments to an article in We Already Know, which suggested that the House of Usher’s collapse was in danger of being canceled by Netflix. Flanagan tweeted: “Happy to report that this whole article is bullshit – The Fall of the House of Usher is on schedule, we just delivered it and will be out later this year as planned Airing on Netflix.” “We’ll be announcing the date soon. Whoops.
Fans’ concerns aren’t entirely unfounded, given Flanagan’s move to rival Amazon, and Netflix’s reported plans to cut spending by $300 million in 2023. Several other Netflix shows were also axed, including 1899 and the live-action Resident Evil series. Add that to a steady stream of competition from other streaming options, and viewer discontent over price increases and new rules on shared logins that could hurt them even more, and fans have reason to be concerned.
Flanagan’s response is comforting to Flanaverse and Poe fans who have been eagerly awaiting the release of the limited-edition series, which officially wraps up filming with four episodes in the summer of 2022. In addition to following the plot of Poe’s original book, the series also incorporates Poe’s other works (similar to Flanagan’s past haunting at Bly Manor), and the story revolves around a man with several disturbing characters. A secret spooky country estate unfolds.
No release date has been announced for The Fall of the House of Usher, but it is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2023.
